All of the Product Directives are supported by European (EN) Standards that provide additional detail for manufacturers, so that they can be sure they are fulfilling the essential requirements.  Using European standards is not mandatory, but the essential requirements of a Directive are usually so general that standards are needed to understand precisely what to do

Some European standards are directly equivalent to internationally agreed ISO or IEC standards, and all EN standards are now offered to the International Standards Organisation (ISO) for adoption as ISO standards, as a matter of routine.
